No Clear Business Model? Then You’re Running a Hobby, Not a Business
Let me just say it bluntly -“We’ll figure out monetization later” is one of the most dangerous sentences I hear from early-stage founders.
Every time I hear it, I pause. Because I know exactly where this mindset leads - burnt-out founders, empty bank accounts, and a brilliant idea buried under poor planning.
Somehow, in the startup world, this “we’ll think about money later” attitude has become fashionable. Maybe it’s because of all those startup success stories where founders raised millions before even launching. But here’s the reality -what you see in the news is the exception, not the rule.
A business, at its core, is about creating value and exchanging that value for money. If you can’t explain how the money flows into your business, you’re not running a business. You’re running an expensive experiment. And experiments are fine- if you have the time, money, and appetite for risk. But most founders don’t.
I remember a founder who came to me with a really interesting social app. It was beautifully designed, the interface was smooth, and people loved using it. But here’s the catch- they had no revenue plan. None. They were hoping that “once the user base grows, we’ll find ways to monetize.”
Fast forward 18 months - the users loved it, engagement was high, but there was no cash flow. Eventually, the team couldn’t sustain the servers or pay the salaries, and the project died. Not because the idea was bad. Not because the team was lazy. But because a clear business model was missing from day one.
I get it - figuring out your revenue model isn’t glamorous. It’s not as fun as designing your product or pitching to investors. But it’s essential. You need to know if you’re charging per unit, per subscription, per transaction, or if your model relies on advertising, partnerships, or licensing.
Because here’s the truth - when you push monetization to “later,” you’re not just postponing revenue. You’re postponing the entire learning curve of what people will actually pay for. And the longer you wait, the harder it gets to adjust your product and pricing to match reality.
I’m not saying you need to make money from day one. But you need to know how you will. Even if your plan changes later, and it will - you should have a working assumption. Otherwise, you’re driving without a destination, hoping the road will take you somewhere profitable.
And if you’re spending investor money without a clear business model? You’re not just risking your dream, you’re risking someone else’s trust. That’s a responsibility you can’t take lightly.
So if you’re reading this and you’re in the early days of your startup, take a pause. Ask yourself: If I had to generate my first rupee tomorrow, how would I do it? If you can’t answer that clearly, your priority is not more features, not more followers, not a new office. Your priority is building a real business model.
Because a startup without a business model is like a house without a foundation - it might look great for a while, but the first big storm will bring it down.
